2005 President's MessageFriends: Recently Trendl Associates, Ltd. celebrated its 3rd anniversary. The last 3 years have proven to be a most interesting time. In our view, while the governmental statistics point to a rather robust economy, there does seem to be a disconnect between Wall Street and Main Street. Many of us are still reeling from the catastrophic events of 9/11 and the subsequent conflict in Iraq and the U.S. recession. As a consequence of what many termed a perfect storm, a sizable number of individuals found themselves reorganized, laid off, terminated or outsourced as businesses course corrected, merged, sold or jettisoned divisions and business lines. The question we are continually asked, “Is it getting any better out there?” can only be answered by stating that it depends upon whose ox is being gored. If you are one of those still seeking employment, the answer is obviously no. If you weathered the storm, the answer is probably yes. Trendl Associates, Ltd. feels that we are at an economic crossroads. Perhaps best compared to historical shifts of an agrarian economy to a metropolitan industrial societal-economy in the 1920’s and then beginning again in the late 1980’s as the shift from those industrial center businesses to a service sector economy. Today, the shift seems to be moving from a service sector economy to a knowledge-based economy. Time frames are constricted and events seem to happen in lightning quick fashion. In short, if the work can be written, it can be outsourced. Knowledge is proprietary. Therefore, the surest employment for this stage would be those areas needing proprietary knowledge skill sets. Education, health, science are some industry areas that come to mind. Entrepreneurism seems more rampant than ever before as small companies and shops set up to service a particular niche of needs, headed by people who possess a particular knowledge and expertise. Where then does that leave us? We know that those who persevere are those who embrace change. Don’t fight the trend, embrace it. Change is an extremely frightening concept for some and the answer for them is usually paralysis. For others change is an exciting concept. To be willing able to alter and adapt, will provide those individuals with success as we continue to march forward. My friends, we’ve been here before and survived, we can do it again. Regards,
